The Gap a Standard CO Alarm Leaves
UL 2034 does not allow listed CO alarms to automatically display or sound below 30 ppm. At 70 ppm, a listed alarm is specified to sound within 60-240 minutes. For comparison, the EPA's outdoor air standard for CO is 9 ppm averaged over eight hours. That 70 ppm alarm point is nearly eight times higher. The WHO's 2021 guideline is lower still: 4 mg/m³ over 24 hours, about 3.5 ppm.
These are outdoor air-quality benchmarks, not alarm setpoints. But they show why a silent alarm doesn't mean your air is clean. The LL6270 is built for exactly that range, and the CA6150 keeps the listed alarm protection codes call for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why not just buy the CA6150?
Because it is designed to stay silent at low levels. UL 2034 doesn't allow it to warn below 30 ppm, and at 70 ppm it can take up to four hours to sound. You can check low readings by pressing its button, but only if you think to look. The LL6270 watches those levels around the clock and warns you automatically.
Why not just buy the LL6270?
The LL6270 is not UL listed, so it can't replace a listed CO alarm where code requires one. Defender designed it to supplement a listed alarm, not substitute for it. The kit gives you both.
Does the kit meet building code?
The CA6150 carries the UL 2034 listing codes reference for residential CO alarms. Many jurisdictions accept battery-powered alarms in existing homes, while new construction and major remodels typically require alarms powered by the building's wiring with battery backup, interconnected when more than one is required. If the installation is for a permit or inspection, check with your local building department first.
Is the kit cheaper than buying both separately?

Will the LL6270 sound at 5 ppm?
No. At 5 ppm it shows the reading on its display. The red light starts flashing at 9 ppm within 10 minutes, and the horn starts at 15 ppm within 60 minutes. Alarm times get shorter as CO rises.
Do both units last ten years?
No. The CA6150 runs for ten years and carries a ten-year limited warranty. The LL6270 carries a three-year limited warranty, and Defender recommends replacing it every three years to keep its display accurate. Its end-of-life signal comes on at five years.
How many kits do I need?
It depends on the size and layout of your home. At minimum, place a listed alarm outside each sleeping area and on every level, and place low-level monitors in or near the rooms your family uses most, especially bedrooms of young children, older adults or anyone with a medical condition. Many homes need more than one kit or extra LL6270 units.
Are the two units connected to each other?
No. They are separate single-station devices with no wired or wireless interconnection. If your installation requires interconnected alarms, the kit does not meet that requirement.
